Your autoclave may give you multiple cycle options ā but that does NOT mean every cycle can be used.
Many autoclaves offer a range of cycles, such as 134Ā°C Universal, 121Ā°C Soft cycles and other specialised programs.
However, your team must only use the cycle that has been validated during your annual validation and listed on your certification documentation.
Selecting a cycle that has not been validated means you cannot guarantee that the sterilisation process is meeting the required standards ā and this becomes a serious cross-infection breach.

This week, I challenge you and your team to take 5 minutes and check:
āļø Do we know which autoclave cycle has been validated?
āļø Is this information easy for every team member to access?
āļø Are all staff selecting the same approved cycle?
āļø Have new team members been trained on this process?
Some newer autoclaves can be locked to only allow validated cycles, which is a fantastic safety feature, but many machines still allow access to all available programs.
Remember: Just because you can press it, doesnāt mean you should.
