What Peru Has Taught me About Great Teams
Sometimes the biggest lessons come from the people we least expect
This week’s tip comes to you all the way from Peru, where my 21-day adventure has just begun.
If I’m honest, I arrived with a picture already in my head of what this trip would look like.
I expected it to be full of young, vibrant travellers, lots of energy, lots of fun, and probably people very similar to myself.
Instead, when I arrived, our group was beautifully different.
There are only a few of us around my age, and many of the group are retired and in their 60s, 70s and 80’s.
At first, I felt a little reluctant.
Maybe even a little disappointed.
But wow… was I wrong.
These incredible women and men have absolutely expanded my mind.
The conversations have been rich, thoughtful, funny, wise, and genuinely life-giving.
Yesterday, we were in the desert sandboarding, and watching everyone throw themselves into the experience with such joy and courage was honestly inspiring.
It reminded me of something so important for our clinics and teams: sometimes our expectations stop us from seeing the value right in front of us.
We can easily assume
- who has the most to teach us
- who brings value to the team
- who is “experienced”
- who we naturally connect with
- whose voice we listen to
But some of the greatest learning comes from the people we least expected.
A senior DA.
A new team member.
A receptionist who sees the patient journey differently.
A dentist with a completely different workflow.
A mentor who challenges how we’ve always done things.
Wisdom lives everywhere when we are open enough to receive it.
This week in your practice, I’d love to challenge you to do one thing:
learn something beautiful from someone in your team.
Ask a question.
Listen properly.
Find out how they think.
Learn from their experiences.
Notice the strengths they bring.
