Sometimes, it is the smallest piece of equipment that protects one of the most expensive items in your surgery.
This week, we are looking at the implant motor sterilisation protector, commonly referred to as an autoclave plug.
Are you protecting your implant motor lead correctly?
During implant surgery, the surgical motor lead and handpiece are exposed to blood, aerosols and contamination. They must therefore be cleaned, packaged and sterilised correctly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
Before the surgical motor lead is packaged and placed into the steriliser, the correct sterilisation protector must be fitted to the connection point.
This small protector helps prevent steam and moisture from entering and damaging the delicate internal components and connections within the lead.
One size does not fit all.
The protector must be compatible with the specific implant motor system being used.
- An NSK surgical motor lead requires the appropriate NSK protector.
- A W&H surgical motor lead requires the appropriate W&H protector.
- Different systems may have different connections and processing requirements.
Do not force an incorrect cap, attachment or connector onto the lead. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for use and ensure the team knows which protector belongs with each surgical system.
Why does this matter?
A missing or incorrect sterilisation protector may result in:
- Moisture entering the internal connection.
- Damage to delicate components.
- Intermittent faults or equipment failure.
- Expensive repairs or replacement costs.
- Delays or disruption during implant procedures.
- Reduced lifespan of the surgical motor lead.
Your staff could be costing your practice more than you realise — not because they do not care, but because they may never have received correct implant-specific training.
When an expensive surgical lead is damaged repeatedly, replacing the equipment will not resolve the underlying problem. The team must understand how the equipment is assembled, cleaned, protected, packaged and sterilised.
