Are Your Implant Setups Truly Sterile? Here’s What Your Team Needs to Know
Are we all surviving January?
Once the year gets moving, clinics get busy fast — and it’s often the small setup steps that get rushed or skipped. In implant dentistry, it’s rarely the surgery that causes problems, but the setup before the patient even enters the room.
That’s why this week’s Tip of the Week focuses on implant motor and lead setup, and how to protect the sterile field from the very start.

This Week's Tip: Implant Motor, Lead & Handpiece Setup (Sterile Field Essentials)
This week, I want to focus on something I see done almost right in many clinics:
setting up the implant motor, lead, and handpiece while maintaining a true sterile field.
A small break in technique here can compromise the entire procedure.
If your team isn’t 100% confident with:
- How the motor lead enters the sterile field
- Correct barrier placement
- Managing cables without contaminating gloves or drapes
- Maintaining sterility during speed and torque changes
…this is where risk creeps in.
I’ve created my usual step-by-step “How-To” educational sheet for this exact setup — clear, practical, and designed for real surgeries, not textbooks.
