Let’s start with a bad habit I see everywhere.

The Habit

You cover the suction with your hand so the clinician can talk.

Quick. Easy.

Wrong.

What’s Actually Happening

When you block the suction:

• Pressure is disrupted

• Contents in the suction line can reflux (come back up)

• That includes everything sitting in those lines

Yes — that’s going back towards the patient.

Why It Matters

You can:

• Flush lines

• Follow protocols

• Do everything right

• …but this one habit can undo it.

This is a cross infection risk — not just a shortcut.

Where It Gets Worse

Most disposable suction tips have no anti-reflux protection

Reusable systems like Dürr Dental cannulas:

• Have internal valves

• Reduce backflow risk

• Support better IPC

What To Do Instead

• Turn the suction off properly at the unit
