Using Viraclean in Your Clinic?

This week’s tip is coming straight from something I see regularly during clinical audits.
It’s one of those habits that often starts with good intentions — someone is trying to “disinfect” or “pre-clean” instruments before they go into the ultrasonic bath. But the product being used matters, and this is where I often see Viraclean being misused.

Let’s be clear:
Viraclean is a hard surface disinfectant.
It is not designed to be sprayed onto RMDs — or as we commonly call them, instruments — before they go into the ultrasonic bath.
This is a big steri workflow reminder because using the wrong product in the wrong place can create problems over time, including damage to materials such as plastics, incorrect cleaning processes, and confusion within the team about what should happen before ultrasonic cleaning.
So what should happen instead?
Pre-cleaning ideally should start in the treatment room.
If there is visible cement, composite or debris on instruments, it should be removed carefully with a clean gauze while it is still fresh and easier to wipe away.
Once the instruments are transferred safely into the sterilising area, any RMDs that are suitable for ultrasonic cleaning should go into the ultrasonic bath according to your practice procedure and the manufacturer’s instructions.
For items that cannot go into the ultrasonic bath, always check the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
Do not guess.
Not every instrument, component or device can be cleaned the same way, and some items have very specific cleaning requirements.
