I can officially say I am well and truly back from my holidays.
After some incredible adventures, a chance to recharge, and time away from the day-to-day, I've come back with fresh eyes and renewed energy for the second half of the year.
One thing I always do after a break is take stock.
What's working well?
What have I achieved?
Where are the opportunities to improve?
And it got me thinking...
We're now halfway through the year, which makes this the perfect time for every dental practice to ask the same questions.
As individuals, we've all learned new things, overcome challenges, and achieved goals over the past six months. But as teams, there is always room to grow.
Sometimes it's improving communication.
Sometimes it's becoming more efficient chairside.
Sometimes it's refining your surgical workflows.
And sometimes it's simply getting back to the basics and making sure standards haven't slipped.

Tip of the Week: PPE: The Small Things Matter
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is one of those areas where small shortcuts can quietly become bad habits.
Over the past 12 months, I've visited practices across Australia & Nz and continue to see common issues such as:
- Masks worn below the nose
- Protective eyewear not being worn consistently
- Long sleeves under clinical gowns
- Gloves being worn outside clinical areas
- Team members touching phones, keyboards, and door handles while gloved
- Inconsistent PPE protocols between team members
- Hand Hygiene, don't get me started
The challenge is that these behaviours often develop gradually and become "normal" within a practice.
The solution?
Take 10 minutes this week and observe your team's PPE habits with fresh eyes.
Ask yourself:
- Are we following current guidelines?
- Are we consistent as a team?
- Would a new staff member know exactly what is expected?
- Are we setting the standard we want patients to see?
The strongest teams don't wait for problems to appear. They regularly review, refine, and improve their systems.
